Why Vijay Sethupathi didn’t receive Kalaimamani from CM?

Multiple versions are doing the rounds dishing out reasons behind why Vijay Sethupathi, who was selected for Tamil Nadu government’s Kalaimamani award did not receive the award from the Chief Minister on  Tuesday night.

Sources say that though Vijay Sethupathi’s name was there in the list, the invitation did not reach him on time leading to confusion. Others say he reached the venue late.

However there are speculations that the actor’s alleged speech against Abrogation of Art 370 in Kashmir to a radio station in Australia recently could have led to the situation. But the exact reason is not known.

Vijay Sethupathi’s comments on the abrogation of Article 370 got appreciation from a section of the netizens and local politicians.

In a radio interview with SBS Tamil Australia, the actor said, “It is against democracy. Periyar has already spoken about this. Can I interfere in someone else’s affair? One can show that they care about someone, but cannot impose their decisions on someone else. The move saddens me,” the actor said.

He said: “This is against democracy. Periyar had said earlier itself that people themselves should decide on their problems and issues. Can I interfere in the affairs of your house? It is you who live there and know what is best for you. I can be concerned about you, but cannot impose my decisions on you. These are two different things.”

The actor was in Australia to take part in the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne recently. Sethupathi won the Best Actor award for his role as a transgender in the critically-acclaimed film Super Deluxe. The actor was present to receive the award along with director Thiagarajan Kumararaja and actress Gayathrie.
