Many prominent citizens of Tamil film industry have expressed anguish over the firing in Thoothukudi, which has reportedly killed at least 12 people.
Rajinikanth: One can’t understand why the government, which gave the nod for the plant, is not taking any action and is just watching.
Kamal Haasan: The expansion (of Sterlite Copper) should not at all be allowed. If possible, it will be good to close down the (existing) unit.
Shankar: It is shocking and painful.. my deepest heart felt condolences to the families of the people who died in tuticorin
Suriya: Twenty-five years back, Sterlite industry was opposed by Maharashtra and the burden was placed on the heads of Tamil people. Citizens of Tamil Nadu and Tuticorin are continuously opposing the industry, they didn’t start their protest yesterday, they have been protesting for twenty-five years. Even small kids are coming to the streets to shut down the copper plant. My question is despite polluting the water, air, and livelihood of people in Tuticorin, why the industry was given permission to operate. Whenever I visited Tuticorin, local people told me that they don’t want the Sterlite industry in their town. People can no longer lose their livelihood and things went beyond tolerance level.
Karthi: The protest happened without any political interference, the shootout against the people is heart-wrenching. The Government should come forward and shut the Sterlite Copper plant.
Dhanush: The feelings of people who are protesting against Sterlite should be respected, they should get the deserved justice and those who are responsible for the situation must be punished. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families.
