We have shortlisted 5 places for AIIMS : TN govt

Tamil Nadu health secretary J Radhakrishnan has said five places in the state have been shortlisted for setting up an AIIMS in TN.

Speaking to reporters in Madurai, he said the central government would take a final decision on AIIMS. He said the multi super speciality hospital in Madurai will be opened in July.

The Union Health Ministry on Thursday filed an affidavit before the Madras High Court bench here, seeking three months time to announce the location for setting up an AIIMS in Tamil Nadu.

Sanjay Roy, Director in the Department of Health and Family Welfare, filed the affidavit, saying the government has to analyse various factors, such as rail and air links, before deciding on the location.

The Union government, in a sub application filed before Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, has sought an additional three months to finalise the site for establishing All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Tamil Nadu.

It said that the Selection Committee constituted for the purpose had decided to meet on June 18 for the purpose of finalising the location.

Five locations in the State – Perundurai (Erode district), Chengalpattu (Kancheepuram), Thoppur (Madurai), Sengipatti (Thanjavur) and Pudukottai (Pudukottai) – have been short-listed for setting up the institute.
