The newly reconstituted Vishaka Committee of the state police department on Thursday began a formal inquiry into the sexual harassment complaint filed by a woman officer in the rank of Superintendent of police (SP) against an Inspector General (IG).
The first round of inquiry headed by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Seema Agarwal began Thursday morning. The inquiry meeting was held at the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) office in Foreshore Estate.
The new committee will constitute ADGP Seema Agarwal, ADGP S Arunachalam, DIG PC Thenmozhi, retired additional SP Saraswathi and senior administrative officer Ramesh from the office of DGP as members.
“The new committee will look into complaints from all units of the Tamil Nadu police. The committee is probing the allegation of a woman SP against an IG,” an official said.
The formation of the much-talked about committee has come amidst reports that a woman Superintendent of Police had lodged a complaint accusing a senior police officer of harassing her.
The Union government had also passed the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, to protect women from sexual harassment at their place of work.
