Vijay to roll out gold ring scheme for newborns on September 28
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is scheduled to launch the Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam at the government hospital in Usilampatti, Madurai, on September 28.
The initiative will provide one-gram gold rings to babies born in government hospitals across Tamil Nadu.
The scheme had initially been planned for September 15, coinciding with former chief minister CN Annadurai’s birth anniversary, but was deferred following the Chief Minister’s visit to the UK.
A review meeting on the revised launch was held by Vijay at the Secretariat on Friday. According to a government release, Tamil Nadu records about 7.8 lakh births annually, with approximately 4.2 lakh, or 53%, taking place in government hospitals.
For the initial rollout, the government has procured 1.28 lakh gold rings. Each ring will carry a unique serial number and be supplied in tamper-proof packaging.
The distribution system will operate through 107 hub centres, with up to 100 rings being provided each day. The scheme covers children born in government hospitals from June 22, 2026.
From the launch date, eligible newborns will receive the rings when they are discharged and return home from hospital.
The programme will initially exclude Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts because the Election Commission’s model code of conduct is currently in effect following the announcement of bypolls in the Madhurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies.
