Vijay orders round-the-clock monitoring of Chembarambakkam reservoir ahead of monsoon
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has instructed officials to monitor Chembarambakkam reservoir continuously as the state prepares for the northeast monsoon.
During his inspection on Monday, the Chief Minister reviewed the reservoir’s storage position and examined key infrastructure, including the intake tower and bund areas, with Water Resources Department officials.
Vijay directed authorities to maintain constant surveillance of water levels, inflow and discharge. He also emphasised the need to keep control rooms staffed and operational throughout the day and night.
Officials were told to inspect sluice gates, power connections, backup power systems and communication facilities to ensure they remain functional during emergencies.
The Chief Minister further stressed that any release of surplus water must be carried out in a controlled, phased manner to reduce the risk of flooding in low-lying areas along the Adyar river.
He instructed the administration to issue advance warnings to residents downstream before releasing water and ensure coordinated action by the Revenue Department, Police Department, Greater Chennai Corporation and Metro Water authorities.
Vijay also highlighted the importance of maintaining appropriate reservoir levels throughout the monsoon, balancing flood protection with Chennai’s drinking water needs.
