There was feverish speculation within the Indian media since last night that business tycoon Vijay Mallya, who lives the high life in Britain despite owing a consortium of Indian banks £1.05 billion (Rs 9,961 crore), was to be put on a plane and flown back to Mumbai any minute, with one TV channel claiming he was on board a plane on Wednesday night.
The media reports said he would be accompanied by the CBI and ED, produced in court and lodged in Arthur Road Jail, Mumbai, as the extradition legal issues were complete.
However, Mallya’s personal assistant was quoted as saying by TOI she was unaware of any developments relating to his extradition. “I am not aware of him going back tonight,” she said late Wednesday.
Reports said Vijay Mallya would be flown to Mumbai as the case against him was registered there, sources in the investigative agencies disclosed to IANS on Wednesday.
The fugitive businessman will be accompanied by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. At the Mumbai Airport, a medical team will do his health check-up, they said.
However, an official confirmation from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) or Government of India is still awaited. Vijay Mallya is accused of defrauding various Indian banks of Rs 9000 crores.
When he will be brought to India, he will be accompanied by officials of Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), said IANS. Both the agencies are likely to vie for custody of Vijay Mallya.
