Vidya Pradeep lists out her struggles in film industry

Actress Vidya Pradeep, who was part of films like Maari 2, Iravukku Aayiram Kangal and Thadam, is playing the lead role in popular Tamil television serial Nayagi.

In a long post about the struggles she had faced, she said, “Before Thadam, there was a phase in my life when I had to walk out or be replaced in six projects which I had signed, one after the other, for very unprofessional reasons. I was heartbroken. Then I thought, movies were not my cup of tea and just started focusing on my studies.”

She said further, “One day casting director Sruthi called around midnight and insisted that I meet the director the next day for an audition. This time I reached the movie office without any expectations. After the audition and look test I was confirmed for the role.”

According to Vidya, “Thadam restored my faith in the system of movie making. This also gave me a hope that you can still survive in the industry with your talent alone. There exist good filmmakers who look only for talent in an artist.

But self-made actors like me who don’t have a Godfather or recommendations or anybody to refer, should be prepared to face extreme hardships. You could be avoided, ignored or not even considered as an artist certain times because you don’t follow the ‘norms’.”

She practiced Bharatanatyam during her childhood. While pursuing her PhD, Vidya worked as a model and appeared in several print and television advertisements. She also appeared in the music video for A R Rahman’s Aa Bhi Jaa from his studio album Raunaq alongside Yami Gautam and several other models.

Vidya was signed to play a role in a film by Lohithadas, but the film didn’t materialise. She was subsequenly signed to play a supporting role in Aval Peyar Thamizharasi (2010) and debuted under the name Dhyana. Her next film was Virunthali (2010), where she played the heroine.
