US President Trump says he had good meeting with PM Modi

US President Donald Trump ‌has said he had a “very good” conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding the two countries are working on trade deals.

Speaking to reporters at the G7 meeting in France, Trump called Modi a “tough negotiator,” and said he will be going to India “sometime in the future.”

The meeting comes at a crucial juncture in India-US relations, as both countries seek to address recent areas of disagreement and strengthen strategic engagement. Ahead of the formal talks, Modi and Trump briefly interacted during a gathering of G7 leaders in the French town of Evian-les-Bains. The exchange marked their first face-to-face meeting in more than a year.

Diplomatic sources indicate that one of the major items on the agenda will be efforts to accelerate negotiations on a proposed bilateral trade agreement. Both sides are also expected to explore opportunities to deepen cooperation in sectors considered vital to long-term economic and strategic interests.

The upcoming talks will be the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since their discussions at the White House in February 2025, shortly after Trump began his second term as President.

Relations between New Delhi and Washington have faced challenges in recent months. Trade disputes intensified after the United States imposed higher tariffs on certain Indian exports. Differences also emerged over remarks made by President Trump regarding the India-Pakistan military tensions that occurred earlier this year.

While Trump repeatedly stated that US intervention played a role in reducing tensions between the two countries, India maintained that the cessation of hostilities resulted from direct communication between New Delhi and Islamabad, without any external mediation.
