This year Rotary International is giving a Greater emphasis on Girl children /women Empowerment. A lot of special initiatives have been launched and one such is a focus on Menstrual Health of the girls and children as unless we take Health seriously the other initiatives fall through.
Undergarments is something you take for granted until you don’t have it. When we talk about Menstrual health and hygiene, the first thing we emphasize is a clean Underwear. And our project Fresh & Clean is all about providing girl children from underprivileged background studying in Government schools with a set of 3 soft cotton Undergarments. We have distributed these kits to nearly 8000 girl students studying in Class 9th and 10th in Greater Chennai Corporation Schools across the city. 35 Rotary clubs from Chennai had joined together to execute this project reaching out to 70 schools. While the innerwear kits are being distributed by Rotary clubs in various schools, they have also ensured that a session on Menstrual Health & Hygiene is also taken for the benefit of the students.
Today as part of concluding this project these kits were distributed to 740 girl children in Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School Perumbur and 345 girl children in Chennai Girls high school Market Street Perambur by Rtn Vinita Venkatesh, wife of Rtn Venkatesh Rotary International Director and Rtn Punitha Sridhar wife of Rtn Sridhar governor Rotary International district 3232 and Rtn Sarada Ramani Chairman Menstrual Health and Hygiene along with Presidents of various Rotary clubs in the city.
