Ukraine calls India’s ceasefire proposal the broadest among four options
Ukraine has described India’s proposal for ending hostilities with Russia as the most comprehensive of four ceasefire initiatives currently under consideration.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv was prepared to consider a truce covering not only battlefield operations but also attacks on energy infrastructure and activity in the Black Sea.
According to comments reported by Ukrainian outlet European Pravda, proposals have been put forward by India, the United States, Egypt and Türkiye. Sybiha said India’s plan had the widest scope and indicated that Ukraine was open to an arrangement combining an energy ceasefire with a Black Sea truce.
The Indian proposal is believed to have been discussed during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent bilateral engagement with Ukrainian officials, including his visit to Ukraine and a subsequent meeting with Sybiha on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Turkish and Egyptian initiatives reportedly include efforts to revive the Black Sea grain arrangement, which collapsed after Russia withdrew from the agreement in July 2023.
The UN- and Türkiye-backed deal had facilitated Ukrainian grain shipments through the Black Sea. After its collapse, Ukraine developed an alternative maritime export route, although Russian military activity has increasingly affected shipping through the region.
India has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the means to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The war has also created wider international concerns over food, fertiliser and energy supplies.
