Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks trigger political row; film personalities react
Actor-turned-politician and Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, has found himself at the centre of a controversy following remarks made during a DMK protest over the Cauvery water-sharing issue. The comments, widely interpreted by political rivals and sections of the public as referring to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and a female actor, sparked criticism from political leaders and members of the film industry.
Udhayanidhi was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the remarks and was later granted bail. Although he did not identify anyone by name during his speech, the alleged innuendo generated widespread debate on social media and in political circles.
Several actors and public figures criticised the remarks, arguing that personal attacks and insinuations have no place in political discourse.
Actor Kangana Ranaut described the alleged comments as inappropriate and welcomed the legal action taken in the case, stating that public discourse should remain civil and respectful.
Actor and BJP leader Kushboo Sundar termed the remarks offensive and urged political leaders to refrain from dragging women into partisan battles. She said disagreements between political opponents should not result in personal or gender-based attacks and called for an unconditional apology if the comments were directed at a woman.
Singer Chinmayi Sripaada also expressed disappointment over the controversy. She remarked that many people initially did not understand the alleged innuendo and argued that younger political leaders should help elevate public discourse rather than normalise offensive language. She added that women should not become collateral targets in political rivalries.
