Udhayanidhi Stalin arrested

Actor-producer and DMK youth wing leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was detained by the police today after he staged a protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Chennai.

Along with scores of DMK workers, Udhayanidhi staged the sudden protest and attempted to tear copies of the Bill. Following this, he was arrested, reports said.

DMK president M K Stalin has condemned Chief Minister K Palaniswami for the AIADMK’s support to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in both Houses of Parliament, saying the ruling party in Tamil Nadu has betrayed minorities and Sri Lankan Tamils.

Hitting out at Palaniswami, Stalin, whose party vehemently opposed the Bill in Parliament, said the AIADMK supported the legislation only to allegedly see that corruption charges against its government were not looked into.

Stalin on Thursday said that a protest against the CAB will be initiated in Tamil Nadu. In a statement, Stalin announced that a protest in all districts of Tamil Nadu against the CAB will start on December 17.

The development comes after the DMK chief called the CAB unconstitutional. He said this soon after the CAB was cleared in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

“It is unconstitutional to link citizenship with religion.#CAB2019 is a direct assault on secularism, equality and fraternity – principles which are essential to any democracy. AIADMK once again stands completely exposed for its decision to support this immoral legislation,” he stated.
