Former Union minister and senior DMK leader T R Baalu has been made party’s principal secretary. DMK president M K Stalin has made an announcement in this regard.
The post fell vacant after S Duraimurugan was elected as party treasurer. The announcement about the appointment was made by Stalin through a release today.
Baalu was tipped to get this post even when the elevation of Stalin as party president was still in progress.
While the recent DMK general council meeting unanimously elected Stalin as president and Duraimurugan as treasurer, the post was left vacant.
The appointment of Baalu to the fourth important position in the DMK is apparently aimed at consolidating votes of the influential Mukulathor (Thevar, Kallar and Maravar) community in the Delta region.
Baalu, though always contested polls in and around Chennai, the DMK feels his appointment can bring his community closer to the party. Baalu’s son T R B Rajaa represents the Mannargudi constituency in Tiruvarur district.
