TN’s Covid tally crosses 4.5 lakh as State adds 5,976 more infections

Tamil Nadu added 5,976 new cases on Friday taking the case tally to 4,51,827, with 51,633 people still under treatment. The state reported 79 deaths, which took the cumulative toll to 7,687.

The State’s tally touched 4,51,827, of which 51,633 persons are still under treatment. A total of 3,92,507 have been discharged so far after treatment and 7,687 persons have succumbed to the infection. On Friday, 6,334 persons, including 1,040 in Chennai, were discharged.

According to the Union Health Ministry, India’s COVID count has reached 39,36,748 including 8,31,124 active cases and 30,37,152 cured/discharged/migrated patients..

Chennai, along with a majority of the northern districts, accounted for nearly half of the fresh infections. Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur had 370 and 260 cases respectively. In Tiruvannamalai, 215 persons tested positive, while districts such as Kancheepuram, Ranipet and Vellore had 100-plus cases.

For the second day, Chennai cases stayed below 1000 at 992 and 12 people succumbed to the infection. While Chennai’s three neighbouring districts added 784 new cases, Coimbatore and Cuddalore together added 1,094 new infections.

The eight western districts with 11,839 account for 23% of the state’s active cases. The 10 southern districts had 7,147 and eight Central districts had 5,437 people still under treatment.
