TNEB acknowledges billing lapses behind high electricity bills, issues warning to officials

The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has admitted that shortcomings in its internal monitoring system contributed to incorrect electricity bills issued to many consumers. The utility has warned that officials found responsible for negligence, including senior engineers and revenue staff, could face disciplinary action.

According to an internal communication circulated among senior officials, inspections meant to verify meter readings and billing accuracy were not carried out effectively. As a result, defective electricity meters, incorrect readings, and billing discrepancies were not identified in time, leading to a rise in complaints from domestic consumers over unusually high power bills.

The communication also noted that faulty meters were often overlooked during initial inspections, with responsibility for addressing the issue being left to local section offices. This practice reportedly contributed to delays and lapses in resolving billing problems.

To improve the situation, TNPDCL has directed officials to conduct regular inspections, carry out large-scale verification of meters, respond more quickly to consumer complaints, and ensure accurate billing. Superintending engineers have also been instructed to fix accountability within their respective circles and take immediate corrective action whenever irregularities are detected.
