Tamil Nadu on Wednesday reported an all-time single day high of 1,927 new coronavirus cases while 19 people died, taking the infection count to 36,841 and the toll to 326, the government said. This has led to fears of community spread.
A total of 17,675 samples were tested, taking the total number of specimens examined so far to 6,38,846. Of the fresh infections, Chennai accounted for 1,392 cases as its tally alone touched 25,937.
Chennai accounts for 1,392 of these 1,927 cases and these cases also include 30 returnees — four of them from abroad and the rest from other states, including Maharashtra and Delhi.
The state’s case count reached 36,841 and with 19 more fatalities in the last 24 hours, the state’s death roll stands at 326.
The day also saw 1,008 persons being discharged from hospitals across the State — the highest number of persons to be discharged on a single day. With this, a total of 19,333 persons have been discharged till now in the State.
However, the COVID-19 toll continued to increase with 19 more fatalities — 12 in government hospitals and seven in private hospitals. This took the total number of deaths in the State to 326.
With each passing day, the numbers have been rising steeply. The State capital has seen 25,937 cases so far.
The number of cases have risen rapidly post the beginning of Unlock 1.0 where the State government had announced a slew of relaxations.
