Heavy rains in delta districts, more showers predicted

TN to get heavy rains: Red alert issued in 4 districts

With northeast monsoon turning vigorous, regional meteorology centre issued a ‘red alert’ to the administration in The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni and Dindigul districts. The hilly areas of these districts are likely to receive heavy rainfal.

A red warning for extremely heavy rainfall has been issued to parts of Tamil Nadu even as the northeast monsoon descended over the state last week. On Monday, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai issued a red warning for Tuesday. “Extremely heavy rain (more than 20 cms) is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu (the hilly areas of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni and Dindigul districts).” it said.

Landslips were reported at least in 10 places in Nilgiris district following rains during the last two days, particularly in Coonoor, disrupting movement of vehicles in the morning, officials said. However, operations to clear the debris are going on a war footing, they said.

The Dindigul district administration also issued an advisory to public to not visit tourist destinations in Kodaikanal hill for the next two days as a precautionary measure. Normal life was disrupted heavily in Ooty and surroundings as rains continue to lash the hills. A few trees were uprooted owing to landslides blocking traffic on the Ooty-Coonoor road.

Wet conditions are expected to continue across Tamil Nadu this week, with the IMD’s regional centre issuing an orange “be prepared” alert for ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall (i.e. 105-204 mm) in Theni, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thirunelveli and Kanyakumari

The alert will extend to Nilgiris and Coimbatore on Tuesday, while on Wednesday, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur near the eastern coast may get up to ‘very heavy’ rainfall at isolated places.

S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai, said, “As far as the next two days are concerned in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, most areas will receive rainfall. Southern districts like Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, northern districts like Tiruvallur, Nilgiris and Coimbatore will experience extremely heavy rainfall in some parts. Delta districts, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Salem, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Erode and Tiruppur will experience heavy rainfall in some areas.”
