After a significant reduction in the last three days, the number of people testing positive rose to 56 on Friday, taking the Tamil Nadu’s COVID-19 tally to 1,323 in 34 districts of the State.
According to an official release, of the 56 cases, a maximum of 17 was reported from Thanjavur, Chennai (11-one Primary and ten contacts), Kanniyakumari and Tiruvallur and Tenkasi (5 each), Tiruvarur (4), Vellore and Trichy (3 each), Nagapattinam, Theni and Villuppuram (2 each), Karur and Dindugul (one each).
Of the containment zones in the State, rural areas account for 239 of them and urban areas 149, according to data available with the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
As a precautionary step, the government had already placed orders for 1.25 lakh kits from China and remitted payment for it also, he said adding the 24,000 kits were part of this.
Noting that there was some delay in getting the consignment from China, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami assured all measures to quicken the rest of the shipment from the dragon nation.
DMK president MK Stalin on Friday hit out at Chief Minister K Palaniswami for his expectation that the number of fresh coronavirus cases will slide to zero, and demanded expeditious steps to procure equipment and carry out rapid testing, besides measures for treatment, relief and rehabilitation.
Palaniswami had said that the State was in the second stage of the spread, and Thursday’s new number of cases of 25, as against higher numbers in preceding days, showed that the State has managed to contain it. The Chief Minister had hoped the number of fresh cases will soon touch zero as the rate of people getting cured was also increasing. He hit out at Stalin for doing politics at this critical time.
