State Food Minister R Kamarajhas tested positive for COVID-19 and has been admitted at MIOT hospital for treatment.
Sources said that Kamaraj recently attended the Pongal gift hampers distribution function in Tiruvarur.
Doctors suspected that the minister might have contacted the virus from the function. After testing positive, officials in Tiruvarur were directed to test all those who were in close proximity to him in the function.
Sources also said that a detailed medical bulletin will be released by the hospital in the evening.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu recorded 811 cases of COVID-19 and 11 deaths on Wednesday.
Of the daily total, seven cases were imported from other states. With Chennai recording 228 fresh cases, the total number of cases recorded touched 8,23,181.
The total number of active cases in the State currently stands at 7,665, with Chennai having 2,327 active cases.Around 2,146 passengers that travelled from the UK to Chennai have been tested as of Tuesday, of which 24 have tested positive for COVID-19.
