TN local body polls on Dec 27, 30

The long wait is over at last. The State Election Commission today announced that local body elections in Tamil Nadu will take place in two phases- December 27 and 30.

Already, the AIADMK and the DMK have started the process of receiving applications from aspiring party members to contest in the civic polls. Local body elections are pending in the State since 2016.

The local body polls were not conducted in the state for over three years now due to various reasons. The Supreme Court has already mandated early conduct of the polls.

DMK approached the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking a direction to the government to complete the delimitations of wards in five new districts. Stalin said his party moved court to ensure that the civic body poll was conducted as per court guidelines.

“In the past three years, the government created as much confusion as possible to avoid holding local body elections. But it is now blaming us for the delay,” Stalin said while interacting with reporters at the party headquarters.

The DMK recently argued in the Supreme Court that the local body elections in Tamil Nadu should be conducted only after the delimitation process is completed in the newly formed districts.

However, the Supreme Court, based on an undertaking given by the State Election Commission, ordered the notification of the elections before December 13.
