TN leaders against Centre’s move to stop Tamil news in radio

A reported decision of the Central government to shut down certain regional news units of All India Radio has evoked sharp criticism from political parties here. In Tamil Nadu, the Tiruchi AIR unit is being wound up.

Paatali Makkal Katchi founder Ramadoss called the move ‘unjustified’. In a statement released here, he said, “In the name of downsizing, the government has carried out an unfair move”. “The ones who will be the most affected are the staff who are relocated to various regional centres across the country”, he added.

Urging the centre to revoke the decision, the PMK leader said, “The government should make another announcement that regional news will continue in the bulletins. It also should drop the idea of shutting down the press information office branches in Madurai and Chennai.”

TMC president G.K. Vasan said news on radio continues to remain a vital source of information for rural India.
