TN govt sanctions Rs 10 cr for Tamil chair in Harvard University
Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 10 crore towards setting up of a Tamil Chair at the Harvard University in the US, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has said.
The setting up of such a Chair would immensely contribute to Indology and also research on Tamil literature and culture, Palaniswami said in a statement.
Cardiologist Dr Vijay Janakiraman and oncologist Dr S T Sambandam had floated the idea and had personally contributed funds towards it.
Janakiraman and Thirugnanasambandam, who had been making efforts for establishing the Tamil Chair at the varsity, had taken up the matter with Jayalalithaa and sought the government’s help, he said.
Jayalalithaa had in her party’s election manifesto in 2016 announced that her government would take steps for setting up a Tamil Chair in Harvard University.
“I have directed that a sum of Rs 10 crore be granted on behalf of Tamil Nadu government, which follows Amma’s footsteps, towards setting up a Tamil Chair at Harvard University and implement the promise,” Palaniswami said.
