The Tamil Nadu government today announced the pre-mature release of 67 life convicts who have completed 10 years of imprisonment, in commemoration of the birth centenary of former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran.
According to an official release, in the first phase, 67 convicts who have served 10 years, in prisons across the state, as on February 25 would be released.
It said as per Article 161 of the Constitution,
in line with the powers vested with the Governor and by following the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court and High Court, the Government issued Orders (GOs) pre-maturely releasing 67 life convicts who had
completed ten years in prison.
“The government, which has been functioning on the path shown by late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, has in the first phase decided to pre-maturely release 67 life convicts, who had completed ten years in prison as on February 25, 2018,” it added.
The decision had been announced by chief minister K
Palaniswami during an MGR birth centenary event at Dindigul in December last year.
Two government orders envisaging guidelines for the
release of prisoners have been issued, the release said further.
