After many staff members of Raj Bhavan tested positive, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.
“He is asymptomatic and clinically stable,” said an official bulletin from a private city hospital. The Governor has been advised home isolation and he will be monitored by a team of doctors from the hospital.
Purohit was taken to the hospital in Chennai on Sunday morning. The hospital visit came against the backdrop of 87 employees of Raj Bhavan testing positive in less than ten days.
“He underwent further tests and assessment at the hospital. As the infection is mild, he has been advised home isolation and will be monitored by the medical team of the hospital,” the bulletin added.
The Governor is already in home isolation since July 29 when three Raj Bhavan staff had tested positive for the virus. The Raj Bhavan in a statement had then said he was “fit and healthy”.
Earlier, 84 other Raj Bhavan personnel, mostly employees from security and fire service department had tested positive. The Governor’s office had then said these personnel were not working in the main building and did not come in contact with the Governor or other senior officials.
As a precautionary measure, however, the entire area of Raj Bhavan, including offices, was fumigated by the civic body. Also, Raj Bhavan tours for the tourists had already been cancelled till August 31.
