TN declares holidays for colleges till January 1

Even as protests against Citizenship Amendment Act are taking place in various parts of the state, the Tamil Nadu government today said colleges and universities will remain closed till January 1.

A notification from the higher education department however did not mention CAA agitations as the reason behind the decision to close colleges.

It said the higher educational institutions are being closed in view of local body elections, Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Sporadic protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act were held by different organisations in various parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday. The CPI-M-affiliated Students Federation of India (SFI) held protest in colleges in Cuddalore, Kumbakonam, Aranthangi and Chidambaram.

In Madurai, a group of lawyers held a protest, shouting slogans against the CAA. Similarly anti-CAA protests were also held in Erode and Trichy, as per reports.

Sudents of the Madras University staged protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act for the third consecutive day. A large number of police personnel guarded the gates of the campus. The students staged their protest and raised slogans against CAA.
