Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today announced free ration for family cardholders for the month of June too.
Like how it was in the past couple of months, cardholders are entitled to get a kg of tur dal, sugar and a litre of edible oil. Tokens will be distributed at doorstep between May 29 and 31. Goods will be distributed from June 1 onwards.
The State government has set aside around ₹219 crore towards the provision of tur dal, edible oil and sugar, free of cost, to all ration card holders in June, as part of its COVID-19 relief measures.
The amount has been sanctioned towards the purchase of 9,667 tonnes of tur dal, 2.07 crore pouches of palmolein oil and 43,282 tonnes of sugar. Even though 20,775 tonnes of tur dal are required per month, the State government has been able to reduce the quantity of requirement in view of the Centre’s allocation of 11,108 tonnes to the State.
Tamil Nadu government had recently constituted a high-level committee headed by former Reserve Bank of India Governor C Rangarajan to assess the overall immediate impact of Covid-19 pandemic on different sectors of state economy.
The committee, which will also consist of Finance Secretary S Krishnan as coordinator, will submit it’s report to the government within three months, according to a Government Order.
It added that the panel will also assess the impact of the lockdown, additional costs and implications due to social distancing and their precautionary measures.
