Deepavali, the festival of lights, was celebrated with traditional fervour and joy across Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
Crowds in front of wine shops in Chennai on Wednesday were no lesser than those at temples and cinema halls, as tipplers celebrated Deepavali by quenching their ‘thirst’ with their favourite brand of liquor.
According to sources, while the target for the whole week was Rs 500 crore, the target for Wednesday alone was Rs 150 crore, owing to festival demand.
On an average, it sees liquor sales of Rs. 50-60 crore on week days and Rs. 80-90 crore on weekends, according to the officials.
On an average, more than 70 lakh people consume liquor every day across its outlets in the State. TASMAC is one of the major cash cows of the Tamil Nadu government.
Meanwhile, in a majority of households, bursting crackers continued to be the norm, besides preparation of sweets and snacks.
Tamil Nadu, known for fans of top Tamil actors making a beeline to cinema theatres to watch the Deepavali release of their favourite stars was no exception this year too.
