TN breaches 20,000 mark with biggest single day spike of Covid-19 cases

Tamil Nadu saw a fresh spike in novel coroanviurus cases today after 874 new patients were tested Covid-19 positive in the last 24 hours. This is the highest single-day spike in the state so far. The last biggest 24-hour spike was 827, which was recorded on Thursday.

With 618 cases, Chennai continued to add the most to the State’s kitty. The city’s tally stands at 13,362. Meanwhile, Chengalpattu reported  61 fresh cases taking the district’s tally to 1,000. Among fresh cases, 141 are people from outside which include 135 from Maharashtra.

Among the nine deaths, five succumbed at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Three of them had been transferred from private hospitals, and they died within 48 hours of referral or testing positive. Four others died at private hospitals.

With the latest fatalities, the death toll in the state has risen to 154. According to a department bulletin, the total number of positive cases stands at 20,246 till date.

The number of active cases, including those people in isolation wards, was 8,776. Friday marked the third straight day when the number of positive cases crossed the 800 mark in the state. Among the 874 cases, 141 were those who had arrived from various states, the health bulletin said.

Of the new cases reported, 135 patients — six from domestic flights and 129 by road— were returnees from Maharashtra and were tested positive in the state.

Apart from that, a total of 11,313 patients have been discharged or cured of the highly contagious disease, including 765 such patients discharged today, the state health department added.

Speaking at a meeting with the district collectors through video conferencing at the Secretariat, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said, “The only medicine available for preventing the coronavirus infection is people’s cooperation.

Everyone should understand the importance of the guidelines given by the government.” Since there is no drug available for this infection, people should behave with self-discipline as per the guidance of health experts, he added.
