TN Assembly meets, Guv announces Pongal gift, Oppn stage walkout :
Opposition parties led by DMK president and Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin staged a walk out of the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s opening session on Wednesday, after attempting to raise various issues before the customary Governor’s address.
As the governor began his address saying ‘Vanakkam’ and gave a message to the members of the House stressing on ‘simple living,’ Stalin stood up trying to say something.
Then Stalin and DMK members staged the walkout after they were denied permission to talk about Cyclone Gaja, HIV transfusion issue and Sterlite problems.
DMK’s allies — Congress and Indian Union Muslim League too followed suit. Speaking to mediapersons outside the Assembly, Stalin said Tamilnadu government has failed in all fronts.
Purohit in his customary New Year address in the Assembly today said the government will give Pongal gift hampers containing raw rice, sugar, raisins, cashew nuts, cardamom and sugarcane to all card holders along with Rs 1,000 as cash support in all districts except Tiruvarur, were election code of conduct is in effect.
Purohit begun his speech with New year wishes in Tamil and broadly outlined the policies and programmes of the State government.
He said the government has formulated a comprehensive housing project called Tamilnadu Housing and Habitat Development Project to transform slums in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts with World Bank funding assistance.
