TISSNET 2020 Preparation tips for beginners

The TISSNET exam is a national level entrance exam to secure admission into the renowned Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for their prestigious M.A. programmes, which are considered equivalent to the MBA programmes offered by top B-schools. Notably, TISS Human Resource Management and TISS Globalisation & Labour courses are highly sought after, due to their high demand in the job market and lucrative salary packages.

The TISSNET exam, like the other management entrance exams, is a tough nut to crack as well. However, it is not impossible if paired with the right and timely preparation strategy alongside due dedication and commitment.

The TISS 2020 exam is a computer-based exam with 100 questions in total, to be solved in a duration of 100 minutes. It is a single session exam with no negative marking and awards +1 marks for every right answer. The total area of questions are 4 which are clubbed into 6 sections respectively. Also, the TISSNET Scoring Pattern is changed. The General Awareness Section has 40 marks; English Proficiency has 30 marks; Maths and Logical Reasoning section carry 30 marks.

Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning: Time & Work, Time Speed Distance, Averages, Algebras, Ratio, Percentage, Mixtures & Alligations, Inferential and visual reasoning, DI with pie chart, graphs, Quadrilaterals, Number System.

English Proficiency: Reading Comprehension, Analogy, Synonyms & Antonyms, Fill in the blanks, Sentence Correction, Sentence Completion, Idioms

General Knowledge: History, Meaning of terms, Social Activities and Movements, Geography, Indian Polity and Constitution, Science, Current Affairs. 

How to prepare for TISSNET 2020 as a beginner? 

General Awareness

  • As mentioned earlier, the TISSNET exam is dominated by General Knowledge. Therefore, preparation for the same must be done thoroughly and seriously. To brush up your GK, reading newspapers is indispensable! This way, you can have your very own own TISSNET 2020 question bank! You must go through the current affairs of the past 6 months along with brushing up your History, Geography and Polity.
  • Do read the Manorama Yearbook and refer to TISSNET GK sample questions from TISSNET Mocks and previous years TISSNET question papers.
  • Key GK topics to prepare for TISSNET 2019 preparation includes:
  1. Static GK about India like Constitution, Geography, Polity, Rivers, Indian Economic facts e.g. GST, Demonetisation, Govt schemes, Who’s who, Awards, Sports among others.
  2. United Nations Organization (UNO)- its various wings, Head Quarters, key decisions and announcements.
  3. Various burning issues of the recent times, trending topics like Me Too, Fake News, Social Media among others

Quantitative Aptitude

Revise all the critical Quant topics beforehand, especially the ones which hold the highest weightage in the exam. Practice 70-80 questions from this section thoroughly from these topics before moving on to the next.

The must-do topics from this section are: Percentages, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Time Speed and Distance, Time and Work, Mixtures and Allegations, Ratio and Proportion, Averages and Linear Equations.You can prepare simultaneously for Logical Reasoning as well, but devote at least 3 hours to the same.

For both maths and the LR, speed is the key. You must divide time according to the topics at hand and deal with them accordingly. For example, try solving over 100 questions of pie chart within 3-4 days. So that you are all set with pie charts and hop on to further topics like graphs, profit and loss calculations, calculating total income, relations, square roots calculations etc.

Last but not the least, English proficiency must be a weak area for some, though it is relatively easier to ace compared to the other sections. To improve upon the same, you should try reading extensively so as to increase your subject knowledge and enhance your vocabulary as well.Do refer to Norman Lewis’s or Word Power Made Easy to fix your root word strategy, practice at least 3 Reading Comprehension passages everyday and learn 10-15 idioms everyday to get ahead in this section rapidly.

Once you are a couple of months away from this crucial exam, do wrote 4-5 full length Mock Tests everyday to see where you stand in terms of your performance. Mock tests will also take care of your Verbal and everything else you can keep revisiting in some time so further strengthen your command over them.
