Tipplers in the city may no longer have to travel to neighbouring districts to quench their thirst as Tasmac outlets in their neighbourhood will be open from Tuesday.
The shops will be open from 10am to 7pm and tokens will be issued to a maximum of 500 customers a day, a government press release said on Sunday. Wearing a face mask is mandatory for buying liquor.
However, shops in malls and containment zones will not be opened. Each TASMAC outlet will issue 500 coupons per day and hence, only 500 customers can make purchases from a shop.
The statement further noted that customers must wear masks and they should maintain social distancing when visiting the liquor outlets. The liquor shops in the rest of the state were reopened on May 7.
After a period of strictly enforced lockdown that existed for over 75 days, TASMAC shops in the state, located outside Chennai City limits, were allowed to open from May 7.
Owing to Chennai’s steeply increasing number of COVID-19 cases, the government took precautionary measures to keep the state-run TASMAC shops located inside Chennai to remain shut. This came as a disappointment for tipplers in the city.
Elite shops selling premium and imported liquor, operating in shopping complexes and outside containment zones, will also be thrown open for the public. Those in malls will remain shut. The city has 31 elite Tasmac outlets, including one in each mall.
