Tight security in Coimbatore after violence over Hindu leader’s murder

A state-wide dawn to dusk bandh called on Friday by Hindu Munnani in protest against the alleged murder of its spokesperson turned violent and targeted police, as some miscreants torched a police vehicle in Thudiyalur on Coimbatore outskirts.

C. Sasikumar, 36 a resident of Subramaniyampalayam and PRO for Coimbatore unit of Hindu Munnani was hacked to death by four unidentified men using lethal weapons on Thursday night.

“He was returning home, when four persons in two wheelers chased and attacked him with sickles at Subramaniyampalayam. The public rushed him to a private hospital with multiple cut injuries, but he died without responding to treatment,” police said.

Six special police teams have been formed to nab the culprits, police said. Some schools in the city declared holiday in view of the tense situation.

Hindu Munnani state president Subramaniam said party leaders had been attacked since the Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations. “It shows the failure on the part of the police. We were observing a state-wide bandh on Friday,” he said.

On Friday, scores of people who headed to pay homage to Sasikumar and later participated in his funeral procession resorted to violence, pelting stones at buses and shops at several places. They also allegedly targeted places of worship, creating a scare.
