Even before the storm triggered by the arrest of 10 policemen of the Sattankulam Police Station, from the Inspector of Police to constables — in connection with the deaths of traders P. Jayaraj and J. Benicks – has subsided, the Inspector of Police of nearby Thattarmadam Police Station has been booked in a case of abduction and murder of a youth, allegedly orchestrated in connivance with an AIADMK functionary and his supporters.
Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK has dismissed its Tuticorin party functionary A. Thirumanavel for acting in a manner that brought disrepute to the party.
In a joint statement, party Coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator and Chief Minister K. Palaniswami announced Thirumanavel’s dismissal and asked other party cadres not to have any truck with him.
On Monday, Thirumanavel, who was AIADMK’s Tuticorin South District Traders Wing Secretary, and another person had surrendered before the local court in Chennai in connection with the kidnap and murder case of youth Selvan.
After four days of protest, the body of Selvam who was allegedly abducted and murdered by AIADMK members, was handed to the family members. The Thoothukudi district Collector Sandeep Nanduri held talks with the family and also informed that the Tamil Nadu government has transferred the case to CB-CID.
Selvan was allegedly abducted and murdered by a team led by AIADMK member Thirumanavel in connivance with Thattarmadam police inspector Harikrishnan on Friday.
On Sunday, the murder took another political turn after DMK MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan’s car was attacked in Thoothukudi district when the Tiruchendur DMK legislator visited the family members of Selvan.
Selvan and his brothers Bangaru Rajan and Peter Raja had sought anticipatory bail, alleging that the Thattarmadam police inspector Harikrishnan had foisted false cases against them to help AIADMK functionary Thirumanavel (he has since been expelled from the party) who was trying to encroach upon a parcel of land belonging to the trio’s family.
Subsequently, Selvan was abducted and murdered in Tirunelveli on September 17, allegedly by a gang, led by the politician at the instigation of the policeman.
