“The Grand Master” Tamil Movie Review

A beautifully crafted and emotionally rich film, this flick beautifully revolves around the aspirations of a little boy who dreams of making a mark in the world of Chess on the global stage. At the same time, it courageously addresses the harsh realities of caste discrimination and presents a realistic picture of the struggles and hardships faced by sanitary workers, many of whom continue to lead difficult lives.
Abarnathi once again proves her ability to choose roles that are meaningful, substantial and socially relevant. As Vellaiamma, a widowed sanitary worker and a loving mother, she delivers a powerful and heartfelt performance. She wants her only son to become a lawyer and secure a better future, but the boy has a different dream — to conquer the world of Chess.
The pick of the lot is undoubtedly young Ashwin, who plays the aspiring Chess player with remarkable conviction. His character faces ridicule and rejection from society because of his social background, yet his passion for the game remains unwavering.
The journey is filled with obstacles, but Vellaiamma’s determination becomes her son’s greatest strength. Initially unable to understand his obsession with Chess, she eventually realises that the game is truly her son’s calling and stands firmly behind his dream.
Suresh Menon plays a character who represents the deep-rooted social divide between the privileged and the underprivileged. His portrayal adds conflict and intensity to the narrative, particularly as the mother and son struggle to overcome the barriers placed in their path.
The eventual triumph of the mother and son in the final showdown provides the film with an engaging and satisfying climax.
Tamilarasi, as Malar, Vellaiamma’s friend, delivers a noteworthy performance and adds warmth to the proceedings. Lingesh and Vetri Cheliyan make their presence felt in neat cameos.
Dinesh Anthony’s background score effectively complements the emotions and intensity of the story.
Above all, Abarnathi proves to be a scene-stealer with a performance that is both powerful and touching. With its inspiring theme, strong performances and socially relevant message, the film emerges as a compelling and heartwarming watch.
