“Thangalaan” Movie Review

In Thangalaan, Pa Ranjith delivers a breathtaking cinematic experience that delves into themes of human greed, societal oppression, and self-empowerment. The film begins by introducing us to the life of Thangalaan, a tribesman in the 18th century who is one of the few landowners in his community. However, the community is oppressed by a cunning landlord who has deceitfully taken over most of their lands, reducing them to bonded laborers. Thangalaan, too, falls victim to this deception but sees a glimmer of hope when a British explorer named Clement seeks help from the tribe to extract gold from the haunted Kolar region.

Thangalaan’s decision to accompany Clement on this perilous journey stems from his desire to reclaim his land and uplift his people. As the story unfolds, the film takes us on a visually stunning journey that spans centuries, exploring the struggles of Thangalaan’s ancestors and the mythical challenges that await them in the Kolar region.

Vikram delivers a powerful performance as Thangalaan, embodying the character’s fury and determination. His portrayal, coupled with Ranjith’s visionary direction, makes for a compelling narrative that is both intense and immersive. The film’s cinematography is nothing short of spectacular, with arresting visuals that transport the audience into the heart of the story. GV Prakash Kumar’s musical score adds to the grandeur, though it occasionally overshadows the dialogue, making subtitles a welcome addition.

The film is punctuated by several world-class set pieces, including a flashback to Thangalaan’s forefather and a thrilling sequence involving a river crossing, a battle with a black panther, and a chaotic guerilla attack. These moments, while visually stunning, also carry a deeper commentary on the social and personal horrors faced by the oppressed.

Thangalaan is more than just an adventure film; it’s a powerful statement on societal inequalities. While some of the oppressor characters might seem exaggerated, Ranjith’s portrayal of the systemic injustices faced by marginalized communities is both thought-provoking and impactful. The film’s final act, steeped in magical realism, challenges viewers to question reality and consider the power of self-assertion in the face of oppression.
