Tamil Nadu’s daily Covid count nears 4,000; crossed 80,000 mark

The daily Covid-19 case count touched a new high in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, with 3,940 persons, including 179 returnees, testing positive for the disease. An 18-month-old baby and a 17-year-old teenager were among the dead, while 1,443 patients were discharged post recovery.

The death of an 18-month-old baby from Villupuram district, the youngest to succumb to the virus in the State, was among the 54 deaths recorded.

The baby died at Villupuram Medical College Hospital on Saturday. With this, the death toll in the TN reached 1,079. DMK MLA from Gingee K S Masthan was among those who tested positive.

With 3,940 new Covid-19 cases, the total number of coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu has now reached 82,275, according to state’s health department.

The death toll in the southern state increased to 1,079 after 58 more virus-related fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours, the authorities added.

In Chennai, the daily case count rose to 1,992, taking the total number of positive cases in the city to 53,762. However, around 60% of those who had been infected had been cured and discharged, according to the health bulletin released by the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash told reporters 2.75 lakh people had been brought into the quarantine cycle until Saturday. “This includes people quarantined under 18 categories, including home isolation, and those discharged from hospitals but are awaiting an exit test,” he said.
