Tamil Nadu to celebrate formation day twice on July 18 and November 1: CM Vijay
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced that the state will officially mark two historically significant dates each year—July 18 and November 1.
November 1 commemorates the formation of the erstwhile Madras State in 1956 following the linguistic reorganisation of states. July 18 marks the 1967 Assembly resolution introduced under former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai that led to the state’s renaming as Tamil Nadu.
The decision comes after years of political debate over which date should be recognised as Tamil Nadu Day. The previous AIADMK government had designated November 1 for the occasion, while the subsequent DMK administration shifted the observance to July 18, arguing that the renaming better reflected Tamil identity.
The new announcement proposes recognising both milestones. However, the move has drawn differing political reactions. Some leaders welcomed the inclusion of November 1, while others argued that the date is also associated with territorial losses during the linguistic reorganisation and should instead remain a day to remember those who fought for Tamil Nadu’s borders.
