Tamil Nadu polls: TVK crosses 35 per cent in early rounds of counting
Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has reportedly crossed a 35 per cent vote share in the early rounds of counting for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
This surge in vote share is reflected in the party’s competitive performance across the state, with the TVK now locked in a fierce battle for the top spot. As of the latest trends, the TVK is leading in over 80 seats, while the DMK-led alliance is maintaining leads in approximately 66 seats.
The AIADMK-led alliance has seen its share significantly impacted by the “Vijay wave,” currently holding leads in 44 seats. In the individual battles for the TVK chief, there has been a notable shift.
After initially trailing, Vijay has now taken a lead in Tiruchirappalli East by over 3,000 votes as of the second round. In Perambur, the contest remains on a knife-edge, with the TVK chief narrowing the gap against the DMK incumbent.
The TVK’s performance is particularly striking in urban centers like Chennai and Salem, where several state ministers, including Health Minister Ma. Subramanian and Tourism Minister R. Rajendran, are currently trailing behind TVK candidates.
With the state recording its highest-ever voter turnout of 85.1%, the high vote share for the TVK indicates a massive shift in the traditional Dravidian political landscape.
Election analysts suggest that if the TVK maintains this 35 per cent threshold, it could emerge as the single largest party, potentially upending decades of DMK-AIADMK dominance.
