Tamil Nadu: Decision on lockdown extension today

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami is toda holding a meeting with the medical experts’ committee to decide on the future of the Covid-19 lockdown in the State.

Responding to a question from a journalist in Salem on the possibility of the lockdown being extended beyond June 30, he said that a decision would be taken after the meeting with medical experts at the Secretariat.

Palaniswami said compared to the other States, Tamil Nadu ranks number one in conducting Covid-19 tests. “Due to the steps taken by the government, death rate is less in Tamil Nadu when compared to the other States.

When asked about the Opposition leader and DMK president MK Stalin’s comment that he was not playing politics in COVID-19 issue, Palaniswami said, “If not politics, what is he doing.

Had he issued any statement regarding how the virus is spreading and how it could be controlled. He comes out of his house once in a while and acts like providing relief materials to the public.

Battling the Covid crisis, EPS sought to bolster his image of a ‘simple and down to earth’ CM further on Thursday during his visit to Coimbatore. Soon after a review meeting at the district collectorate, his vehicle went to the bus stand. Even district AIADMK functionaries and bureaucrats were caught off guard.

The decision of Southern Railway to cancel the special trains within Tamil Nadu till July 15, citing a “request” from the State government on account of the rising number of COVID-19 cases, had triggered speculation over the likelihood of the lockdown being extended.
