Thoongaa Vanam Tamil Movie Review
Good or bad?
STORY
Divakar (Kamal Haasan) is an officer in the Narcotics Control Bureau. He and his colleague Mani (Yugi Sethu) make off with a big consignment of drug king Vittal Rao (Prakashraj).
Following this, Vittal Rao kidnaps Divakar’s son and demands the return of the cocaine load. As Divakar decides to succumb to the demand, he finds the consignment missing.
In the meantime, police officers Mallika (Trisha) and Thiraviyam (Kishore) investigate a murder case and they start following Divakar to unleash his other side. Who is Divakar? Is he good (nallavara) or bad (kettavara)? And is he able to save his son? Thoongavanam tells you answers for all these questions.
ANALYSIS
Kamal Haasan is at it again. With his every film, he takes Tamil cinema to the next level and he precisely does that in Thoongavanam too. Despite a faithful remake of French thriller Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night), a fact the filmmakers clearly mention as the titles play, the film kindles and sustains the interest of Tamil audience, and that’s the power of Kamal.
A warm welcome to director Rajesh M Selva to Tamil cinema, for he has made an impressive debut in association with Kamal. Trisha, for the first time, has played a cop and performed stunt sequences too. This will be an important film in her career.
From Prakashraj to Kishore to Yuhi Sethu to Asha Sarath, everyone is tailor-made to his/her respective role. And with power-packed performance, they have added immense value to the movie.
Cinematographer Sanu Varghese and editor Shan Mohammed have complimented each other well to provide a movie of international standard. So are the stunt choreographers, who have delivered their best. Though there is just one song, Ghibran makes his presence felt with background score.
Some scenes are lengthy and certain portions could have been made more racier. But despite being a long night, Thoongavanam is certainly a happening one and will linger in the minds for a long time.
Rating: Good
