Om Shanthi Om Tamil Movie Review
Peace in pieces
STORY:
A bus accident takes place and only one man Vasu (Srikanth) survives. Soon, he starts noticing five persons following him wherever he goes. When he confronts them, they tell him that they need some favours from him.
Vasu has helping tendency and he gives in to their requests. In the meantime, he also realises that the five are spirits of those who died in the bus mishap.
Vasu works in an automobile showroom and is in love with Shanthi (Neelam Upadhyaya), his colleague. As Vasu keeps on interacting with the spirits, Shanthi starts believing that he isn’t mentally alright.
The rest is all about whether he managed to fulfil their wishes, made Shanthi to understand him and get back together with her.
ANALYSIS:
Though Om Shanthi Om started much ahead than Maasu Engira Masilamani (both apparently inspired by Korean movie Hello Ghost), it has managed to hit the screens only now.
Had it made to the theatres before the Suriya starrer, it would have been a little more interesting as the premise (of the protagonist fulfilling the wishes of spirits) would have been new to Tamil audience.
One of the biggest disadvantages of Om Shanthi Om is the silly back stories of these five ghosts, as they are very kiddish and cliched. It seems the director is not fully confident about his script, as he has made songs and other elements to intrude at regular intervals.
But there are good things too, like some smart scenes and the emotional manner in which director Surya Prabakar narrated the story, unlike Venkat Prabhu who made it Maasu… a masala fare.
Coming to the performance front, Srikanth has done homework to get his act right. Neelam Upadhyaya looks good, while Naan Kadavul Rajendran and others are there in the cast.
While songs carry a heavy touch of Harris Jayaraj, cinematography by Bhaskaran is a big saving grace. Om Shanthi Om was tipped as horror-comedy. But neither horror nor comedy is there in full flow, as both are served in bits and pieces.
