Double-eged sword

(Kathi Sandai – Review)

STORY:

Arjun Ramakrishnan (Vishal) falls in love with Divya (Tamannah). He tries to woo her with the help of his friend and local rowdy Deva (Soori).

After succeeding to do so, he even manages to convince Divya’s brother Tamilselvan (Jagapathi Babu) for the wedding. However, it is learnt that his objective was not to marry Divya, but to take revenge on Tamilselvan.

How and why does he take up this mission forms the rest of the story, which attempts to throw light on the plight of farmers and corrupt people.

ANALYSIS:

After flop shows in Alex Pandian and Sakalakala Vallavan, director Suraaj was expected to deliver a hit, as he had a solid team (Vishal, Vadivelu, Soori, Tamannah etc) to support him.

But Kathi Sandai starts off with the usual template, gathers steam in a predictable way and ends up on a regular note. In other words, the film has got nothing new to offer.

Vishal has worked hard, but in vain. Tamannah has nothing much to offer, while Vadivelu’s is just a comeback. Soori’s one-liners offer only little relief.

Cinematography and music are major reliefs of Kathi Sandai. The film is a best example for how bad writing can spoil the show, despite a strong cast, mighty technical crew and solid production values.
