Kathakali Tamil Movie Review
Dance of destiny
STORY:
From the United States, Amuthan (Vishal) comes to his hometown Cuddalore for his wedding with his lover Meenu Kutty (Catherine Tresa). The coastal town is ruled by dreaded gangster Thamba (Madhusudhanan).
Thamba has earned a lot of enemies due to his notorious activities and Amuthan’s family is one among them. One day, he gets murdered when Amuthan has gone to Chennai to buy dress for his marriage.
The needle of suspicion is pointed towards Amuthan and his brother (Mime Gopi). Thamba’s wife, gang members (one of them, incidentally, was Amuthan’s friend) and a wicked cop (Sreejith Ravi) are now behind the brothers.
Who killed Thamba and was Amuthan able to come out of the trap form the rest of Kathakali, which is a crisp and thrilling tale.
ANALYSIS:
This is totally a new genre for director Pandiraj, who is hitherto known for soft tales from Pasanga to Pasanga 2. But he has emerged in flying colours in Kathakali, in the company of Vishal.
Watching Kathakali was like reading a crime novel in one go. It is racy, crispy and has lot of twists and turns. Vishal, though no different from his earlier movies, presents a rock solid performance.
Catherine Tresa has gathered weight when compared to Madras, and tries to perform well though her character is underplayed. Mime Gopi, Pawan, Srejith Ravi and others are apt.
Hip Hop Tamizhan Aadhi’s music, especially songs, is not up to the mark. Bala Subramaniam’s lens has captured the events in a fast-paced manner. Especially the second half has most scenes during the night, but still they are clear.
There are not many negative points in Kathakali, which is one of the best thrillers in the recent times. It runs for just two hours and doesn’t waste our time unnecessarily.
Verdict: Good
