STORY:
For generations, Gautham’s (Atharvaa Murali) family has close links with the media. While his father (Naren) is a news presenter with Doordarshan, his grandfather was a news reader in All India Radio.
Following their foortsteps, Gautham becomes a TV journalist in a small channel despite being an engineering graduate. Meanwhile, he falls for his colleague (Catherine Tresa) at first sight and it’s romance between them.
When things are going well, Gautham gets arrested by the police on charges of cheating banks to the tune of several lakhs of rupees by producing fake documents and degree certificates.
Slowly, Gautham realises that he has been made pawn in a huge scandal. The rest of Kanithan is all about how he unearths the fake certificate scam and pins down the master mind (Tarun Arora).
ANALYSIS
Debutant director T N Santhosh proves in each and every aspect of Kanithan that he is a student of A R Murugadoss. The movie starts in a leisurely pace, the first hour is predominantly about the lead pair and their romance scenes, things gain momentum in the second half and there is a message at the end.
Having said that, the director has missed out certain things while following his mentor’s footsteps. There are too many songs that mar the flow of the movie and logical loopholes too are present.
Atharvaa Murali has tried his best to establish himself as a mass action hero and succeeds to an extent. He looks comfortable in stunt scenes. Catherine Tresa of Madras fame doesn’t have much scope to perform.
Tarun Aroora looks menacing, but he reminds one of Vidyut Jamwal in Thupakki (directed by Murugadoss). Others in the cast, especially Naren, Karunakaran and Bhagyaraj, have delivered goods.
Arvind Krishna’s stylish cinematography adds immense strength to the movie. Drummer Sivamani’s songs are good, but background score is average. To sum it up, Kanithan could have been a much better show had the director cut unncecessary flab.
