Kanaa Tamil Movie Review

Kausalya (Aishwarya Rajesh) is the apple of the eye of her father Murugesan (Sathyaraj), a farmer in Kulithalai. Murugesan loves cricket a lot and breaks down when India loses the match.

This triggers the fire for cricket inside Kausalya who dreams to be part of the team that represents India in international matches. But the girl faces many hurdles since the sport is considered fit for boys.

She even faces opposition from her home, as her conservative mother (Rama) protests Kausalya playing the game in the company of boys. But Kausalya gets the full support of her father.

As days pass on, Murugesan faces huge losses in agriculture due to drought and is unable to repay bank loan. Now the onus is on Kausalya to win twin targets- to successfully be part of the Indian women’s cricket team and to settle the debts of her dad.

Kanaa deserves standing ovation, especially for three persons- director Arunraja Kamaraj for striking a fine balance between message and entertainment in a content-driven flick, producer Sivakarthikeyan for coming forward to back such a rare attempt and protagonist Aishwarya Rajesh for her splendid performance.

The film is no doubt one of the finest in the recent times and touches our heart with its simplicity, straight-forwardness, striking emotions and sharp dialogues.

Aishwarya, who had already proved her mettle in films like Kaaka Muttai, Dharmadurai and the much recent Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, delivers her career best performance in Kanaa.

The pains she had undergone to get her act right deserve mention and she will sure be in for awards this year. Sathyaraj, after Kadaikutty Singam, plays a farmer-father once again. Rama, Ilavarasu, Darshan, Ramdoss have come up with fine performances.

And the surprise package is Sivakarthikeyan, for his is not just an extended cameo, but the one that impresses us a lot. Dhibu Ninan Thomas’s musical score is the other plus of the movie.

Dinesh Krishnan has added value to the script with his lenses, while Ruben has increased the tempo of the proceedings with his sharp scissors. Kanaa is no doubt one of the best films of the year and it can be added to the list of ‘Must-Watch’.
