Kaappaan : Commando & Country
STORY:
An assassination bid is made on Prime Minister of India, Chandrakant Varma (Mohanlal). Soon, Kathir (Suriya), a military intelligence officer, starts probe to track down the threat the PM is facing.
While his colleagues in the Special Protection Group (Samuthirakani, Prem and Kiran) help him in the mission, Kathir also has a romantic angle with the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Anjali (Sayyeshaa).
The PM has a playful son Abhishek (Arya) who undergoes a change of mind, while there is a multi-millionaire businessman Mahadev (Boman Irani) who is too close to Varma and almost runs the country.
The rest of the film is all about whether Kathir is able to save the Prime Minister and the country, whether he can expose the ones who are working against the nation and who is that mysterious assassin (played by Chirag Jani).
ANALYSIS:
Kaappaan is a grand treat served on a huge platter, but too much of flavours and ingredients spoil the show, despite terrific performance by Suriya and rich production values.
Suriya is right there delivering the right emotions and his hardwork for the movie is something which deserves rich praise. Mohanlal, who speaks lengthy dialogues on patriotism, delivers goods.
Sayyeshaa has been utilised for romantic and glamour quotient while Arya’s role reminds one of Mahesh Babu’s in ‘Maharishi’ and ‘Bharat Ane Nenu’. Writing by Pattukottai Prabhakar is good and some dialogues are interesting.
There is nothing new about Harris Jayaraj’s music as his work seems to be the rehash of his earlier albums. Cinematography, art directions and other things are of top notch.
Director K V Anand has tried to pack too many things in one film, and that has perhaps worked against him and the product. Kaappaan, which takes us to the era of Vijayakanth and Arjun films, will not disappoint Suriya fans.
