Face to Face
STORY:
Akilan (Vikram), a tough RAW officer, loses his wife Meera (Nayanthara) in his battle to bring down a drug mafia led by Love (effeminate Vikram). Hence, he goes on a sabattical.
In the meantime, Love makes a comeback with Speed, a drug, if inhaled, would give enormous strength to the user and makes him/her uncontrollable. Love’s first attack is on the Indian embassy in Malaysia.
Officials summon Akilan to set things right. He too accepts the mission, as he has to settle score with Love. Hence, he starts to Malaysia with his female colleague Ayushi (Nithya Menen).
In Malaysia, Akilan is in for some shocks and surprises. Is he able to put an end to the atrocities of Love or not forms the crux of Iru Mugan.
ANALYSIS
Iru Mugan is solid and stylish, but lacks substance. Director Anand Shankar, who made an impressive debut with Arima Nambi which had a terrific script, misses on writing front in this flick.
But the loss is compensated by two things– terrific performance by Vikram and grand making by Anand Shankar. Add these things to R D Rajasekar’s cinematography and Harris Jayaraj’s background score (his songs give us deja vu feel, as usual), Iru Mugan makes a good weekend watch.
As Akilan and Love, Vikram wows us scene after scene. His contrasting performance in his both characters makes us understand the importance he gives to his job.
Nayanthara performs well, while Nithya Menen shines in her small role. Others in the cast, including Karunakaran, Thambi Ramaiah, Rithvika and Nasser, are adequate.
Had Anand Shankar avoided on cliched and monotonous things, Iru Mugan could have ended up as a much better show.
