Irandam Ulagaporin Kadaisi Gundu : Engaging Explosion

STORY:

A bomb, which was used during World War-II, gets washed ashore. It finally reaches a metal scrap store, where it explodes and claims many lives.

We are told that there are several such bombs in the Bay of Bengal stretch. In the meantime, Selva (Attakathi Dinesh) works as lorry driver in the scrap store owned by Baasha Bhai (Marimuthu).

Employees are being fleeced by the boss there and Selva demands pay hike and better working conditions. He is in love with Chithra (Anandi) who is a teacher.

Chithra’s family is against their love. The rest is all about how the lives of Selva and Chithra are connected to the bomb and its explosion.

ANALYSIS:

Directed by debutant Athiyan Athirai and produced by Pa Ranjith, Irandam Ulagaporin Kadaisi Gundu aka Gundu is a message oriented movie which talks about caste injustice, superstition, capitalism and more.

However, the director has not gone preachy anywhere. Instead, he has conveyed everything through strong scenes and stronger characters. Narration means everything in this film.

Selva type of character is Dinesh’s forte and he does it with aplomb. Anandhi shines bright with a beautiful performance. While Marimuthu, Riythvika and others have performed well, the scene stealer however is Munishkanth.

Tenma’s musical score has added immense value to the movie, while cinematography and editing departments too are good. On the flip side, certain things sound repetitive in the second half, which could have been avoided.

To sum up, Irandam Ulagaporin Kadaisi Gundu talks about the pain of the oppressed in a dignified manner. In fact, it does a better job than Ranjith’s movies.
