STORY:
Abi (Yuvasri) is a class 10 student and is giving up on studies, because she knows her mother Santhi (Amala Paul), a house-help, will not be able to provide for her higher studies.
Her mother tries hard and even enrols her for maths tuition but Abi thinks only children of rich parents become doctors or engineers and believes she’ll end up being a maid too like her mother.
To change her perspective of life Santhi herself gets enrolled into school, with the help of a doctor (Revathy) in whose house she works and headmaster of the school (Samuthirakani).
With the mother himself becoming the classmate of the daughter, what starts now is competition between the two. Other interesting things too follow.
ANALYSIS:
It’s rare to come across films that force you to keep aside your yardsticks of what a good film is and dive into the experience. Amma Kanakku, directed by Ashwini Iyer Tiwari and produced by Dhanush, is one such film.
There is hardly a dull moment in the film despite the subject being a tight rope walk. But there are some melodramatic scenes, and yes, you can bear it considering the honest and sincere attempts by the team.
Amala Paul make this film so memorable, by delivering performance of a lifetime. Samuthirakani is the scene-stealer as the zealous school principal, while Revathi and Yuvasri too add immense value to the movie.
Background score by Ilayaraja proves once again why he is hailed Isaignani. Gavemic U Ary’s cinematography and R K Vijay Murugan’s production design deserve applause. On the whole, Amma Kanakku is fresh, simple, and drives home a message.
